Not much to report on the final day of this vacation. As I wrote in an earlier post, it takes all day to get to Alaska, and all night to get home. We had an 8 PM flight that night out of Anchorage, and our trip would end about 13 hours later.
We were tired from almost two weeks of adventure, but we had plans to visit the Alaska Botanical Garden in Anchorage before heading to the airport. For the first time of our vacation, the weather didn't cooperate. It rained all day. So, instead of more activity, we headed to a shopping mall and ate at the food court (a sign that our vacation was over.) We watched ice skaters on the skating rink in the middle of the mall, then drove toward the airport.
The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is a bike and pedestrian path in downtown Anchorage, running along the Knik Arm and the Cook Inlet. We drove down to one of the trail entrances, and hoped that the weather would break long enough for us to stroll down to the water, but it was not to be. So, we sat in the car and did what most weary travelers do on a rainy afternoon: we took a nap! Fortunately, we only slept for a few minutes, but it provided us with the energy boost we needed to return the rental SUV, navigate security, and board our first of three flights home. No exciting details here...we were back in Florida by noon the next day, and slept for many hours straight - no doubt dreaming of the beautiful Kenai Peninsula.
